if you are talking about the hole at the end of the handle then it would be for a lanyard...put some 550 (paracord) cord through it so you don't lose your knife when using it.
Or are you referring to holes in the actual blade, like Spyderco has? Those are generally used for one handed opening of the blade.

if you are talking about the handle? they put them there to help with weight and balance.
Depends which holes your talking about. Some are just for aesthetics. In other words for looks.
