Violence Tax on Guns and Ammo

    http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012...ite&ocid=msnhp
A proposed new tax in Cook County, Ill., home of violence-plagued Chicago, takes aim at guns, and gun rights activists aren't happy about it.

County President Toni Preckwinkle wants to introduce a "violence tax" on guns and ammunition to help plug a $115 million budget gap in 2013. Under the tax, guns and ammunition would cost more, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, but Preckwinkle isn't saying how much more just yet.

That has to be one of the more missing the real issue things I've read in a while. How do they expect a tax to change anything are they going to tax away violence? I think they need to look deeper into the issues and they didn't post anything stating the numbers for what happened like what percentage was gang and drug related as opposed to self and home defense. Thinking a tax on guns and ammo would generate the revenue there looking for is just crazy that's a lot of guns and ammo or a insane tax increase in one county which if its a huge gun and ammo sales which wouldn't that defeat the reasoning there doing it in the first place.

Also, I think they failed to take into consideration that the largest purchaser of firearms and ammo in Cook county is most likely the Chicago PD, a tax exempt agency that wouldn't pay their new "Violence" tax.
