any dog that has better hearing that you and lets you know when something is out of the ordinary is a great watchdog!

I have 3 labs and one has gone blind from cataracts. He is probably the best guard dog thatb i have ever had. If you are not on his smell or voice memory bank he will arch up until called back. I was a little worried about our grandkids coming over but he seems to love the kids until they try to ride him.LOL
