does the .38 special lose any velocity out of a .357 magnum because of the extra room in the cylinder?

No...There's no problem with that:cool:

But if you shoot a whole lot of .38s out of .357 revolvers, stand by for ejection problems with .357 brass.

I have heard that shooting 44 Specials in a 44 Magnum will leave more lead residue in the cylinder but, with proper cleaning it's a non-issue. I didn't know of any problems putting 38's thru a 357, I've run a fair share through my SP-101 and would usually finish up my range time with some magnums to remind me of how my carry ammo will feel.

Like MP Gunther, I mainly run 38s at the range with my S&W 686+ but finish up with a dozen or more magnums. Never had any problems though I always clean the weapons when I get home.
